In our journey of this life on earth, little do we find time to sit, listen, understand and reflect. We loose our path & go astray from our Home – Our Original Real Self. Living in this illusionary , glamorous world of distractions, we forget our real essential self.
We can all find the path to that destination when we listen deeply to the divine sound resonating within. Our inner intuition. Deep listening leads to understanding & knowledge of ourselves, of our purpose on this earth. Then the journey within starts. This journey is towards our real home.
Our Essential self is all peace, joy, love, kindness, truth. When we have faith within, the obstacles on the way (the worldly pleasures, desires, lust, greed, ego) cannot block our way. So let’s chant this Mantra and while chanting listen,understand & start our journey inwards.

ਮੰਨੈ ਮਾਰਗਿ ਠਾਕ ਨ ਪਾਇ ॥ Mannai mārag ṯẖāk na pāe.
When we have faith in ourselves, obstacles can not block our path
ਮੰਨੈ ਪਤਿ ਸਿਉ ਪਰਗਟੁ ਜਾਇ ॥ Mannai paṯ sio pargat jāe.
When we believe in ourselves, we are honoured.
ਮੰਨੈ ਮਗੁ ਨ ਚਲੈ ਪੰਥੁ ॥ Mannai mag na cẖalai panth.
When we have faith in ourselves, we do not need any empty religious rituals.
In this world of illusions, frustrations, competition, competence, goal settings, materialism, we feel stressed because of fears and insecurities. When we feel entrapped in false attractions and glamour of the world like a rat in a rattrap, somebody comes and advises us to surrender. Now what is Surrender?
Surrender is not to give up or give in or to accept things when you feel hopeless or helpless & it is also not going against your Self worth and Self-esteem.
Surrender, in fact, is the higher level of self -esteem where our faith and belief in ourselves, our being as part of the One Universe leads us from knowledge to wisdom; it is the Self realisation that I ,as this body, have nothing which, I can say is mine, which is permanently going to be with me, which I can surrender because everything I have including my body is temporary.So how can I surrender? & What to surrender then?
This mantra, “mannai surat hovai man budh” inspires us to experience that higher level of self – esteem and self belief.
This further explains that a person who has faith ,with his perceptive eye, knows and understands that his self-respect/self esteem is only a part of respect and acceptance of the higher order – the perfect plan of One Creator – as One whole, of which each one of us is an integral part – when we know and realise this, we are no more in the bondage of ego, we are free, we don’t get hurt ; we accept the higher Order of Nature – this acceptance is Surrender, this is freedom too and this is the Eternal joy – So let’s chant & connect with the Higher Order…….

ਮੰਨੈ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਮਨਿ ਬੁਧਿ ॥ Mannai suraṯ hovai man buḏẖ.
The faithful have intuitive awareness and intelligence.
ਮੰਨੈ ਸਗਲ ਭਵਣ ਕੀ ਸੁਧਿ ॥ Mannai sagal bẖavaṇ kī suḏẖ.
The faithful know about all worlds and realms.
ਮੰਨੈ ਮੁਹਿ ਚੋਟਾ ਨਾ ਖਾਇ ॥ Mannai muhi cẖotā nā kẖāe.
The faithful shall never be struck across the face.
ਮੰਨੈ ਜਮ ਕੈ ਸਾਥਿ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥ Mannai jam kai sāth na jāe.
The faithful do not have to go with the Messenger of Death.

If we know, we are part of that supreme creator and have all the powers of that infinite source of energy and it resides in all of us, we cannot but have highest self-respect. If we see kids, they are always flying in the seventh skies and always feel they are super powers but with the passage of time family, friends, school teachers, peer group and other external influences around put certain impressions and fears into their minds directly or indirectly and they lose their original, real self-respect. As we grow, and while moving in the world around, we start looking at ourselves from others’ eyes – In the search of our self identity in the outside world, we lose our Self-respect because somebody, somewhere, sometime criticised us, laughed at us, made fun of us – the result is low self esteem.
The answer to this low Self-esteem/Self-respect is – Meditation to understand deep within that we are all equal, all one.
This mantra – “mannay kee gat kahee na jaa-ay” inspires us to have faith /belief in ourselves ,for it is only when we know the powers, the virtues with which our Creator has blessed us that we ‘ll regain our lost self – respect, ‘ll start respecting ourselves & then nobody, no external influence can make us feel inferior ; So let’s chant this beautiful mantra, meditate, know & understand ourselves & awaken the powers within……..

Grace is one virtue which we are all possessed of, but unfortunately in the maddening crowd and noise of the world, we have lost that sense of Listening to our inner voice – that Divine Sound – that Brahma Naad which can awaken us from sleep and enable us to interact with ‘Grace’ – when we Chant and Listen to our inner voice and Connect with our ‘Essential Self’ or say ‘Real Original Self’, the Virtue of Grace is evoked. That is the moment when we are Grace – the Love Incarnate, the Beauty – and we see the Grace all around in all beings.

and even if you were known throughout the nine continents and followed by all,
ਚੰਗਾ ਨਾਉ ਰਖਾਇ ਕੈ ਜਸੁ ਕੀਰਤਿ ਜਗਿ ਲੇਇ ॥ Cẖanga nāo rakẖāe kai jas kīraṯ jag le.
with a good name and reputation, with praise and fame throughout the world
ਜੇ ਤਿਸੁ ਨਦਰਿ ਨ ਆਵਈ ਤ ਵਾਤ ਨ ਪੁਛੈ ਕੇ ॥ Je ṯis naḏar na āvī ṯa vāṯ na pucẖẖai ke.
still, if the Lord does not bless you with His Glance of Grace, then who cares? What is the use?
ਕੀਟਾ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਕੀਟੁ ਕਰਿ ਦੋਸੀ ਦੋਸੁ ਧਰੇ ॥ Kītā anḏar kīt kar ḏosī ḏos ḏẖare.
Among worms, you would be considered a lowly worm, and even contemptible sinners would hold you in contempt.
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਿਰਗੁਣਿ ਗੁਣੁ ਕਰੇ ਗੁਣਵੰਤਿਆ ਗੁਣੁ ਦੇ ॥ Nānak nirguṇ guṇ kare guṇvanṯiā guṇ ḏe.
O Nanak, God blesses the unworthy with virtue, and bestows virtue on the virtuous.
ਤੇਹਾ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਸੁਝਈ ਜਿ ਤਿਸੁ ਗੁਣੁ ਕੋਇ ਕਰੇ ॥੭॥ Ŧehā koe na sujẖī jė ṯis guṇ koe kare.
No one can even imagine anyone who can bestow virtue upon Him.

This mantra breaks that negative spiral. “Dukh Par Har” means the let all the pain sorrow , saddness our of ourselves. “Sukh Ghar Lai Jaaye” – means we let happiness, and bliss inside us. He Himself is Immaculate and Pure.
ਜਿਨਿ ਸੇਵਿਆ ਤਿਨਿ ਪਾਇਆ ਮਾਨੁ ॥ Jin seviā ṯin pāiā mān.
Those who serve Him are honored.
ਨਾਨਕ ਗਾਵੀਐ ਗੁਣੀ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ॥ Nānak gāvīai guṇī niḏẖān.
O Nanak, sing of the Lord, the Treasure of Excellence.
ਗਾਵੀਐ ਸੁਣੀਐ ਮਨਿ ਰਖੀਐ ਭਾਉ ॥ Gāvīai suṇīai man rakẖīai bẖāo.
Sing, and listen, and let your mind be filled with love.
ਦੁਖੁ ਪਰਹਰਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਘਰਿ ਲੈ ਜਾਇ ॥ Ḏukẖ parhar sukẖ gẖar lai jāe.
Your pain shall be sent far away, and peace shall come to your home.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਦੰ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਵੇਦੰ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਸਮਾਈ ॥ Gurmukẖ nāḏaʼn gurmukẖ veḏaʼn gurmukẖ rahiā samāī.
The Guru’s Word is the Sound-current of the Naad; the Guru’s Word is the Wisdom of the Vedas; the Guru’s Word is all-pervading.
ਗੁਰੁ ਈਸਰੁ ਗੁਰੁ ਗੋਰਖੁ ਬਰਮਾ ਗੁਰੁ ਪਾਰਬਤੀ ਮਾਈ ॥ Gur īsar gur gorakẖ barmā gur pārbaṯī māī.
The Guru is Shiva, the Guru is Vishnu and Brahma; the Guru is Paarvati and Lakhshmi.
ਜੇ ਹਉ ਜਾਣਾ ਆਖਾ ਨਾਹੀ ਕਹਣਾ ਕਥਨੁ ਨ ਜਾਈ ॥ Je hao jāṇā ākẖā nāhī kahṇā kathan na jāī.
Even knowing God, I cannot describe Him; He cannot be described in words.
ਗੁਰਾ ਇਕ ਦੇਹਿ ਬੁਝਾਈ ॥ Gurā ik ḏehi bujẖāī.
The Guru has given me this one understanding:
ਸਭਨਾ ਜੀਆ ਕਾ ਇਕੁ ਦਾਤਾ ਸੋ ਮੈ ਵਿਸਰਿ ਨ ਜਾਈ ॥੫॥ Sabẖnā jīā kā ik ḏāṯā so mai visar na jāī.
there is only the One, the Giver of all souls. May I never forget Him!

ਆਖਹਿ ਮੰਗਹਿ ਦੇਹਿ ਦੇਹਿ ਦਾਤਿ ਕਰੇ ਦਾਤਾਰੁ ॥ Ākẖahi mangahi ḏehi ḏehi ḏāṯ kare ḏāṯār.
People beg and pray, “Give to us, give to us”, and the Great Giver gives His Gifts.
ਫੇਰਿ ਕਿ ਅਗੈ ਰਖੀਐ ਜਿਤੁ ਦਿਸੈ ਦਰਬਾਰੁ ॥ Fer kė agai rakẖīai jiṯ ḏisai ḏarbār.
So what offering can we place before Him, by which we might see the Darbaar of His Court?
ਮੁਹੌ ਕਿ ਬੋਲਣੁ ਬੋਲੀਐ ਜਿਤੁ ਸੁਣਿ ਧਰੇ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥ Muhou kė bolaṇ bolīai jiṯ suṇ ḏẖare piār.
What words can we speak to evoke His Love?
ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਵੇਲਾ ਸਚੁ ਨਾਉ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਵੀਚਾਰੁ ॥ Amriṯ velā sacẖ nāo vadiāī vīcẖār.
In the Amrit Vaylaa, the ambrosial hours before dawn, chant the True Name, and contemplate His Glorious Greatness.
ਕਰਮੀ ਆਵੈ ਕਪੜਾ ਨਦਰੀ ਮੋਖੁ ਦੁਆਰੁ ॥ Karmī āvai kapṛā naḏrī mokẖ ḏuār.
By the karma of past actions, the robe of this physical body is obtained. By His Grace, the Gate of Liberation is found.
ਨਾਨਕ ਏਵੈ ਜਾਣੀਐ ਸਭੁ ਆਪੇ ਸਚਿਆਰੁ ॥੪॥ Nānak evai jāṇīai sabẖ āpe sacẖiār.
O Nanak, know this well: the True One Himself is All.
INSIGHT
Our Outer World is a reflection of our Inner world. We can attain and accumulate a lot of wealth but still feel void inside us. This mantra guides us towards the path to attain that inner abundance, inner wealth and prosperity. Only when we connect to that creator, that source of all the creation and understand that we are all one and connected, and nothing outside is permanent, nothing which is created in time is permanent, we stop that search for prosperity in the outside world and start looking inside us. And how can we start our journey towards this path of inner prosperity. By Meditating during the Amrit Vela( Amrit Vela is referred to early hours in the morning, around 3:30Am to 5AM) . During this time, the meditation is most fruitful.

ਗਾਵੈ ਕੋ ਤਾਣੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਕਿਸੈ ਤਾਣੁ ॥ Gāvai ko ṯāṇ hovai kisai ṯāṇ.

ਗਾਵੈ ਕੋ ਦਾਤਿ ਜਾਣੈ ਨੀਸਾਣੁ ॥ Gāvai ko ḏāṯ jāṇai nīsāṇ.
Some sing of His Gifts, and know His Sign and Insignia.
ਗਾਵੈ ਕੋ ਗੁਣ ਵਡਿਆਈਆ ਚਾਰ ॥ Gāvai ko guṇ vaḏiāīā cẖār.
Some sing of His Glorious Virtues, Greatness and Beauty.
ਗਾਵੈ ਕੋ ਵਿਦਿਆ ਵਿਖਮੁ ਵੀਚਾਰੁ ॥ Gāvai ko viḏiā vikẖam vīcẖār.
Some sing of knowledge obtained of Him, through difficult philosophical studies.
ਗਾਵੈ ਕੋ ਸਾਜਿ ਕਰੇ ਤਨੁ ਖੇਹ ॥ Gāvai ko sāj kare ṯan kẖeh.
Some sing that He fashions the body, and then again reduces it to dust.
ਗਾਵੈ ਕੋ ਜੀਅ ਲੈ ਫਿਰਿ ਦੇਹ ॥ Gāvai ko jī▫a lai fir ḏeh.
Some sing that He takes life away, and then again restores it.
ਗਾਵੈ ਕੋ ਜਾਪੈ ਦਿਸੈ ਦੂਰਿ ॥ Gāvai ko jāpai ḏisai ḏūr.
Some sing that He seems so very far away.
ਗਾਵੈ ਕੋ ਵੇਖੈ ਹਾਦਰਾ ਹਦੂਰਿ ॥ Gāvai ko vekẖai hāḏrā haḏūr.
Some sing that He watches over us, face to face, ever-present.
ਕਥਨਾ ਕਥੀ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਤੋਟਿ ॥ Kathnā kathī na āvai ṯot.
There is no shortage of those who preach and teach.
ਕਥਿ ਕਥਿ ਕਥੀ ਕੋਟੀ ਕੋਟਿ ਕੋਟਿ ॥ Kath kath kathī kotī kot kot.
Millions upon millions offer millions of sermons and stories.
ਦੇਦਾ ਦੇ ਲੈਦੇ ਥਕਿ ਪਾਹਿ ॥ Ḏeḏā ḏe laiḏe thak pāhi.
The Great Giver keeps on giving, while those who receive grow weary of receiving.
ਜੁਗਾ ਜੁਗੰਤਰਿ ਖਾਹੀ ਖਾਹਿ ॥ Jugā juganṯar kẖāhī kẖāhi.
Throughout the ages, consumers consume.
ਹੁਕਮੀ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਚਲਾਏ ਰਾਹੁ ॥ Hukmī hukam cẖalāe rāhu.
The Commander, by His Command, leads us to walk on the Path.
ਨਾਨਕ ਵਿਗਸੈ ਵੇਪਰਵਾਹੁ ॥੩॥ Nānak vigsai veparvāhu.
O Nanak, He blossoms forth, Carefree and Untroubled.
INSIGHT
This Mantra describes the endless and countless attributes of that Nirgun, invisible, invincible yet omnipresent, omnipotent and omniscient creator of all of us – His power, His knowledge, His attributes, His gifts, blessings, are bountiful beyond description – He cannot be sung and described by anyone – He is the creator – He creates and destroys too and then restores life again. He is far, far away but so near. He is the sustainer and giver of everything and we get weary of receiving. Everything is happening and working according to His Hukam/Order and Will. He – the Supreme Almighty who is the Creator of the whole Creation yet He, who is detached and beyond any bondage of attachment, rejoices at His Creation. And its part of all us.
